This week I focused on researching existing augmented reality technologies to help generate ideas for my own project. I explored well-known examples such as IKEA Place and Snapchat Lenses. One aspect that particularly surprised me was realising that Snapchat Lenses are a form of AR technology. I had previously thought of them as simple visual filters, but understanding the underlying technology made me appreciate their technical complexity. After this realisation, I examined the app more closely, paying attention to how the AR responds dynamically to user movement and facial tracking.

This research shifted my perception of augmented reality from something primarily experimental to a technology that is already widely embedded in everyday applications. It highlighted how AR can be both playful and accessible while still relying on advanced technical systems. This helped me better understand how successful AR experiences balance technical capability with user engagement and familiarity.
Following this research, I began to think more critically about the theme of my own project. I have learned that framing projects around subjects I genuinely enjoy helps sustain my motivation, particularly when technical challenges arise. At this stage, I am considering either a cat-themed concept, drawing on themes from previous work, or an AR experience centred around a musical artist I enjoy. Both ideas feel creatively engaging and provide a clear direction for developing an interactive and expressive AR experience moving forward.
