This week I focused on designing the marker for my augmented reality project. I decided to base the project around a music artist I enjoy, Sabrina Carpenter, as working with a familiar and engaging theme helps sustain my motivation throughout the development process. I felt that creating a poster was the most appropriate format for a music-based AR experience, as posters are strongly associated with artists and translate well between physical and digital contexts.
My aim was to produce a fun, pop-inspired aesthetic while maintaining a fan-made design that allowed for greater creative freedom and personalisation. Designing the poster myself also gave me full control over image choice and composition, ensuring that the final design aligned with the marker-tracking considerations discussed in previous sessions.
I used the web-based design tool Canva to create the poster, as it is software I am already confident using. This allowed me to focus on visual and compositional decisions rather than learning a new tool. Through additional research, I learned that when using portrait images in AR markers, it is best to position them slightly off-centre and ensure they are high resolution to improve recognition accuracy. Overall, this week reinforced the importance of balancing creative design choices with technical constraints when developing effective and reliable AR experiences.
